Maharashtra Assembly Election Result 2024
Vote counting for the Maharashtra assembly elections is set to begin at 8 am, with the spotlight on the contest between the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti coalition and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, which aims to reclaim power.
Who contested on how many seats?
In the Mahayuti alliance, the Bharatiya Janata Party fielded candidates in 149 assembly seats, Shiv Sena in 81 seats and the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in 59 constituencies. In the opposition MVA alliance, the Congress fielded 101 candidates, Shiv Sena (Udhdhav thakre) 95 and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) 86 candidate
These elections will also be a test for the fractured Shiv Sena and NCP, after a split in these parties following a rebellion. If the Maha Vikas Aghadi wins, it will have to move past intra-alliance hurdles over the chief ministerial pick.
In the 2019 assembly election, the BJP-Shiv Sena (undivided) won the majority. The alliance didn’t last long, and the Shiv Sena pulled out, unleashing political turmoil in the state. The state saw three different chief ministers in the last five years: BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis, Shiv Sena’s (UBT) Uddhav Thackeray, and Shiv Sena’s (SHS) Eknath Shinde.
